We then descend to the pass of Deurali, where we enjoy a well-earned meal and a rewarding view of the Annapurna South (7219 m) and Hinuchili (6434 m). We continue our descent through a forest towards the canyon of the Modi Khola and we later ascend back up through flagstone steps. After 6 hours, we arrive at Tolka (1790 m), a pleasant Gurung village with a wondrous vista of the Annapurna South.

Day 5: Trek Chomrong

The trail descends to the Tiger Khola river and climbs up again through forests onto a ridge. After the ridge, a pleasant walk awaits, as you pass through rice terraces, fields, and streams. The path further leads to Landruk (1620 m), the hot springs of Jhinu Danda (1750 m) and Chomrong (2210 m). Chormrong is the common point for all trails leading to the Annapurna peak and is the last permanent village in the upper Moda Khola river valley. Enjoy a rustic yet enchanting stay in Chomrong, with majestic views of Annapurna South and Hinuchili.

Day 6: Rest Day in Chomrong

Chomrong village has a lot to explore and it’s only fair to stay back a day to rest your muscles. The village is beautiful, with Gurung roots, of the famed Gorkha regiments. All the Gurung villages are located on the ridge tops, with majestic views of the Annapurna South. This village has a typical construction style with slate-roofed neat houses making a complex network of terraces. Eagles and vultures circle the villages as they gain altitude in the afternoon thermals.

Day 7: Trek to Dovan

After Chomrong, the trail descends over a stone staircase and crosses the Chomrong river. We cross the small settlement of Tilche and climb out the side valley. This trail is beautiful with dense forests of bamboo, rhododendron and oak. Lunch is served in Sinuwa (2340 m) and after lunch an ascent begins for about an hour. This ascent is through a bamboo and rhododendron forest. We now enter the upper Modi valley and can see the lodges of Bamboo and Dovan below. We stay overnight at Dovan (2500m)

Day 8- Trek to Deurali

Today we climb along across a landslide and through a forest for about 2 hours to reach Himalaya Hotel, which is located in a deep gorge. After tea at Himalaya, we climb a steep ascent to Hinku Cave (3100 m) – named so, as a huge overhanging rock provides some protection against rain and avalanches. After 4 hours of trekking, we reach Deurali for our overnight stay.

Day 9: Trek to Annapurna Basecamp

Above Deurali, the valley widens and it isn’t as steep anymore. We climb through bamboo and birch forest to avoid a dangerous avalanche area, and you can now see the gates to the Annapurna Sanctuary as the mountains start to kick in. We then arrive at Mount Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3700 m). From here you have a ring side view of majestic mountain vistas of Hunichuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III (7555 m), Gangapurna (7454 m) and Machhapuchhare.
